This sign, listing business hours of a dentist's office, still shows the old AStoria telephone exchange name instead of the modern all-number-dialing format. I imagine that most people who see this sign are unaware what that AS.8-5791 is a telephone number. Similar to the Millionaire Realty sign in Astoria I think that this old phone number in modern times looks more like some kind of license or certification number.

This is one of the first telephone exchange name sightings I remember noticing. I had seen this sign numerous times over the years, and I think that if I thought anything at all of the AS4 5500 sign I probably thought it was some kind of real estate certification. "Hey, that place has its AS-4-5500 license, good for them!" No, it is the old-style phone number for Millionaire Realty in Astoria.
AStoria-8-9090 - Steinway Storage Warehouse
I suspect that a lot of folks who see this sign do not realize that ASTORIA-8-9090 is a telephone number. The Steinway Storage Warehouse is visible to anyone driving to Queens over the Queensboro Bridge. In modern times the phone number is (718) 278-9090. This sign is frequently obscured by temporary billboards wrapped around the building.
