\ni thought of that word, the pick word, when the image of bill gates and his wife melinda briefly flew past on the telebision. the abovementioned woman i used to work with remarked to me that she couldn\u2018t understand why bill gates whould \u201cpick\u201c melinda based on passing observations, arbitrary criteria, white cultural standards. my mother made the same generality, assuming that the man \u201cpicked\u201c the woman. i don\u2018t rmemeber now who she referred to or the circumstance but i remember how pointedly she asked why a certain man \u201cpicked\u201c a certain woman. \u201cwhy would he pick her?\u201c asked in a nasally annoyed voice.<\/p>\n

PICK is a vulgar sounding word. it seems appropriate that it would be the action of choice for to initiate a relationship, a marriage, a life together<\/p>\n
