\t\t\t\tThinking of the two girls I saw on
\nChristmas Day, 2011. Sisters or friends,
\nI don’t know, but they skateboarded through
\nempty parking lots and vacant alleys.
\nHaving a good time, it seemed, ‘boarding
\nthrough an empty city on Christmas Day,
\ntheir bodies as skinny as my arm, their
\nvoices loud for such spindly timbre.
\nI walked west on Northern Boulevard.
\nThey kept passing me as they weaved
\nin and out of building backways and paths,
\nlaughing and challenging and double-daring.
\nIt seemed like a nice childhood memory to have.
\nThey passed me on the sidewalk on Northern
\nas I photographed a payphone. They swirled and
\ncircled around me like kites, unaware of my travels.
\nI saw them last in the parking lot outside Starbucks.
\nThey were racing, but together,
\nsmiling and laughing, rolling through Queens,
\npointing toward Sunnyside and heading south like
\nconquering adventurers, the sounds of their
\nskateboard wheels roaring and growling through the
\nsilent Christmas streets.<\/p>\n
