{"id":1639,"date":"2013-01-09T16:44:15","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T20:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/?p=1639"},"modified":"2013-01-09T16:44:15","modified_gmt":"2013-01-09T20:44:15","slug":"madison-avenue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/2013\/01\/09\/madison-avenue.html","title":{"rendered":"Madison Avenue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tWhen the moon fell out of my mouth an<br \/>\nocean of coffee flowed from<br \/>\nHitchcock&#8217;s exploded marrow,<br \/>\nroaring through robotic airholes like the<br \/>\npants of a dozen alcoholics<br \/>\nrioting inside a car trunk built for 4.<br \/>\nAlfred&#8217;s plastic spoon stirred<br \/>\nkerosene into critical speed benchmarks,<br \/>\nupending traditional assumptions of<br \/>\naging and decay with<br \/>\nfoul but predictable outbursts of<br \/>\nanger expressed by<br \/>\nrattled keychains and<br \/>\ncameo fabrications.<\/p>\n<p>Great works of art,<br \/>\nstacked vertically,<br \/>\nstand along Madison Avenue,<br \/>\na road nearly abandoned.<br \/>\nThe Avenue has become an Interstate,<br \/>\nsponges piled on sponges,<br \/>\nlocusts piled on hocus-pocus.<\/p>\n<p>Playthings for the city&#8217;s future<br \/>\nshoveled onto shelves where<br \/>\nthickened plots spoil futuristic foodstuff in<br \/>\ncovert assembly of a planet&#8217;s vibration.<\/p>\n<p>Wither and writhe,<br \/>\ncluck at a lonesome pigeon,<br \/>\ndo not pound tables to<br \/>\nscare the bird away.<br \/>\nTry to understand its chorus,<br \/>\nlisten to the bird&#8217;s<br \/>\ncruelly sycophantic restoration of its<br \/>\nancestors&#8217; sounds, wait for<br \/>\nbirdshit dumped on your<br \/>\nforebears&#8217; heads and shoulders,<br \/>\nlisten for a worthy flapping of ancient air.<br \/>\nThis is a plaything for your children,<br \/>\na reservation for temporal porousness,<br \/>\nan opportunity for infinity to<br \/>\nsqueeze through endless fences<br \/>\nseparating highway from sunset.<\/p>\n<p>I skin the neck of 53rd Street,<br \/>\nblubbering pliant mumbles to myself with<br \/>\nnauseous patriotism,<br \/>\nwelling up with tears at<br \/>\nunfortunate points in an<br \/>\noverheard conversation,<br \/>\ndeclining to explain &#8212; even to myself &#8212;<br \/>\non account of needing to go<br \/>\ntoo far into a city&#8217;s psychosis to<br \/>\nreverse-engineer<br \/>\nbunions of consciousness that<br \/>\nsummoned sadness and selfishness where<br \/>\nnone was needed.<\/p>\n<p>At home I trade the mop for an automatic machine gun.<br \/>\nI swap unused writing implements with increased barometric pressure.<br \/>\nI invalidate memories of angry encounters with cravings for sugar.<br \/>\nI restart a solitary footstep by flubbing lines memorized in grade school.<\/p>\n<p>Brave and hungry the<br \/>\ngrafted clods of politics<br \/>\nhint at minted drivel.<br \/>\nThe brass rivets that once<br \/>\nheld their church together became<br \/>\nmolten slabs of stinking leather,<br \/>\nthe organization and its memberships<br \/>\nrolling into proportional obscurity.<br \/>\nBoarding a train to garbage they<br \/>\nmoped, pouted, tried guilty persuasion to<br \/>\nsecure votes from torrential sobriety,<br \/>\nrivaled each other for excellence in<br \/>\nvillainy, stroked exertions of<br \/>\ngrounded opinions, howled like drowned anger,<br \/>\nstuttered limits in crowded minds and<br \/>\ntreated themselves to dances on obscene wilderness.<br \/>\nThey fantastically woke up among tombstones but<br \/>\nembellished the memory for retelling.<br \/>\nHot and true their keychains rattled,<br \/>\nbitter signals through kitchen noises,<br \/>\nsignals transformed by context into<br \/>\nregulations and repetitions,<br \/>\nslaying normalcy&#8217;s handcuff.<\/p>\n<p>Content to lob infinities at<br \/>\nstranded troubles hunched in<br \/>\nthank-you notes a passing despot<br \/>\ntricked these warring nations into<br \/>\npraising the wrong dusk,<br \/>\ntricked them into blasting accolades at<br \/>\noutdated newspapers covered with<br \/>\nsooty vandalism, tricked them into<br \/>\nboarding a bus departing Madison Avenue for<br \/>\ndestinations unknown, the warriors<br \/>\nsharing unabashed banalities, the<br \/>\nnervousness of travel charging anxieties like<br \/>\nwedding invitations dumped into<br \/>\nmechanical bank mergers.<\/p>\n<p>Some came to believe in the<br \/>\ncompromise of being wrong, the<br \/>\ndisability of a captain at the<br \/>\nhelm of a school bus,<br \/>\na quarterback at a chicken shoot,<br \/>\na plumber at a powwow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sorabji.com\/pictures\/Discarded_Family_Photo_Album\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sorabji.com\/pictures\/53550-2\/DSC06597.JPG?resize=450%2C253\" alt=\"Family Photos\" title=\"Family Photos\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the moon fell out of my mouth an ocean of coffee flowed from Hitchcock&#8217;s exploded marrow, roaring through robotic airholes like the pants of a dozen alcoholics rioting inside a car trunk built for 4.
