\t\t\t\ti slept like a conqueror last night, plowing through hours and hours of righteous slumber that i evidently craved. yesterday was rough. i was intricately irritable. but the disaster averted is as it should be, right? now i can’t decide between backup or raid, but i’m leaning toward raid on all my servers. i never trusted isp backup, and i never will. to be honest, i don’t even understand the logic behind backing up your server to a box that is sitting right next door. if someone breaks in to the primary server then they likely have full access to the backup as well. i think backup should be remote, even it restoring thusly comes at a cost. i may also just retire one of my servers and move the sites thereon to lower-cost shared VPS servers. who cares.<\/p>\n
i wrote what i thought was a pretty decent payphone story today. it’s been in the works for a few weeks. i also wrote to a payphone correspondent, accidently going off on an anti-wikipedia rant before considering whether or not this individual is an editor or a volunteer for that holey tome. whoops. well, who knows.<\/p>\n
the rain kept me indoors all day. i didn’t even leave the apartment until 7pm. that generally means i got real work done. and i think i did. i launched a new web site, too, though i think i’ll re-consider the publishing system for that one. i have a lot of new sites out in the world now. most of them are virtually invisible at the moment, but that will change. it’s good times.<\/p>\n
i found a strange picture of myself from 1999. in those days i was a director of something or other at time-warner. i look grizzled and hairy as hell, more like a hippy than a corporate mucky-muck, the likes of which i never fully embraced. it’s just ironic how i looked like a rebel while at corporate, and these days i look like a straight-laced workerbee.<\/p>\n
i’ve been rambling through the piano sonatas of Clementi. sometimes i question history, or more specifically those who write it. Clementi’s sonatas should be regarded as equal to beethoven in some instances. i don’t know if he ever exceeds Beethoven’s greatest, but Clementi (at his greatest) easily equals some of Beethoven’s best. Horowitz felt the same way, i now remember. hell yeah, me and horowitz on the same page. i remember now how horowitz said Clementi was the first to use the whole piano as part of the concept. yeah.<\/p>\n
i plan to visit Scott Joplin’s burial site tomorrow. a suitable 4th of July excursion, i think, for one who lives nearby. i’ve been there many times but i mostly avoid that cemetery any more. the groundskeeper\/security goons are just too much for me. and i remembered today how, the few times i interacted with the front office, they seemed to be constantly interrupted by strange phone calls. hangup calls, calls where it appeared that the caller said something obscene, calls which the cemetery employees immediately hung up on. maybe all cemeteries get those kind of loony callers, but my limited exposure to the management of the place is mostly consistent with the idea that they either attract or exude antagonism toward the community.<\/p>\n
