{"id":1736,"date":"2011-07-21T20:09:21","date_gmt":"2011-07-22T00:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/?p=1736"},"modified":"2011-07-21T20:09:21","modified_gmt":"2011-07-22T00:09:21","slug":"hole-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/2011\/07\/21\/hole-heat.html","title":{"rendered":"hole heat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\ta loaf of whole wheat bread on my counter has a way of folding over just so, whence the first letters W in the 2 words are obscured under the folds. so my family-friendly loaf of Whole Wheat bread becomes a slightly lurid-sounding loaf of Hole Heat.<\/p>\n<p>today the world is a hole of heat. tomorrow, too.<\/p>\n<p>i feel bad about a guy i saw about an hour ago, sweating like a WaterPik and stumbling around. he bumped into me, looked me straight in the eye, and fell to the sidewalk, curling up and lying stiff on the cement. i knelt down to ask if he was ok, if i should call 911, as others stopped to both stare and offer help. i dialed 911 but the cell phone told me there was no connection available, and to try again in 3 minutes. i resisted calling 911 on someone else&#8217;s behalf, since a simple ambulance response could financially ruin an individual. i did it anyway, but the network was busy, and the phone went into 911 callback mode. after a couple of minutes it seemed like this poor guy was getting plenty of attention (from, I might add, people who spoke his language, which i do not). a flower salesman was pouring water all over the guy, and there seemed to be both coherent conversation and laughter between the two. i decided i had nothing to contribute, and that standing around staring was not productive, so I went along my way, feeling like a little bit of an asshole but also feeling that rubbernecking brought nothing of value to the situation.<\/p>\n<p>ugh. the guy was altogether out there, glassy-eyed and drenched in sweat. minutes later an ambulance showed up nearby, though i am not certain it was there for him. i don&#8217;t know. it&#8217;s not a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>and then i saw a couple of older men passed out at the bus stop.<\/p>\n<p>i should have just stayed inside, blasting the a\/c. it&#8217;s like 40 degrees in my apartment these 110-degree days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>i got an a55 dslr in the mail today, and i was promptly annoyed by it. as typical of sony products, it requires a unique series of batteries, accessories, and attentions. i did not study the specs of the a55 too closely before making the buy, but i assumed it would be a facelift of the a550, which i have used and adored for about 20 months now. the a5 has some features missing in the a550, including 1080 hd video, built-in GPS, and 10fps shooting. the a55 is also noticeably smaller and lighter than the a550. and of course it fits with my closet full of Minolta lenses. all that is good good good.<\/p>\n<p>out of hte box, though, this wasteful demand that iu purchase another battery is annoying, as is the fact that the camera has only one slot for a memory card. the a550 holds 2 memory cards, afeature which has proven handy at times, though it also has proven bothersome. it appears that the remote control gadget i got last week might not work with the a55, but that&#8217;s no big deal either. the lcd screen appears to unfold in a way different from the a550. as someone who is fundamentally opposed to change i find this annoying, but tolerably so.<\/p>\n<p>now that i  let out some out-of-the-box gripes, i find that i have little about which to complain at this point, whilst charging the battery and waiting to actually use the damn camera.<\/p>\n<p>i also got 12 pair of underpants, a BedWedge pillow, a cheap Polaroid tripod, a biography of Cosima Wagner, a retrospective of Liszt&#8217;s master classes, &#8230; and i think that&#8217;s about it. the rest of the shipment comes tomorrow. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>a loaf of whole wheat bread on my counter has a way of folding over just so, whence the first letters W in the 2 words are obscured under the folds. so my family-friendly loaf of Whole Wheat bread becomes a slightly lurid-sounding loaf of Hole Heat. today the world is a hole of heat.
