The station\u00a0is nothing if not shiny and new,\u00a0 and on this Friday at the start of rush hour it\u00a0was almost completely deserted. This, we are told, will change in the coming years, as the far West Side becomes a new destination in its own right.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4494\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC03118.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4494\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4494\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC03118.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"34th Street Hudson Blvd. Subway Station. October, 2015.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The most jarring reality of this new station is that the 7 train no longer begins and ends at Times Square, as it has for generations. The\u00a0culture of\u00a0Queens-bound subway riders who have reverse-commuted a few stops to Times Square so they could get a seat on the 7 train for the long ride home will now have to make it this much farther if they want to be bulletproof certain about getting that seat.<\/p>\n<p>As these photos show those folks probably don&#8217;t have\u00a0to worry about this just yet. October, 2015.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4:02pm on a Friday afternoon and all is quiet at 34th Street Hudson Boulevard. October, 2015.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are no payphones and my cell phone had no signal on the lower level subway platform. For now it\u00a0appears there would be no way to make a phone call in an emergency, though there are several of these <strong>Help Points<\/strong>\u00a0which, at the too-easy touch of a button, instantly connect you with live MTA personnel should one\u00a0need it.<\/p>\n<p>I accidentally pressed the button on one of these Help\u00a0Points, thinking it would provide a service similar to &#8220;511&#8221;,\u00a0the free phone call that provides pre-recorded updates on subway and bus delays within the MTA, Metro-North, and other lines.\u00a0511 still exists but I&#8217;d be surprised if a lot of people know about it. At present there is no access to 511 from the 34th Street Hudson Blvd. station.<\/p>\n<p>Signs all over the station reference the <strong>AREA OF RESCUE ASSISTANCE<\/strong>. That&#8217;s\u00a0an ADA-compliant space where individuals unable to use stairs can, in an emergency situation, safely wait for\u00a0assistance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4503\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC03138.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4503\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4503\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC03138.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"34th Street Hudson Blvd. Subway Station. October, 2015.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The abundance of display advertising LED screens seems to assume a future in which eyeballs will be plentiful. At present the screens only serve up\u00a0advertising and MTA service alerts. None of the MTA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>On-the-Go<\/strong> screens, which provide interactive trip planning and service updates, are present\u00a0yet.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4504\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC03139.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4504\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4504\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC03139.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"34th Street Hudson Blvd. Subway Station. October, 2015.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the station feels something\u00a0like\u00a0rising up out of a canyon. This is said\u00a0to be the lengthiest escalator ride anywhere in the MTA system, and at the end of it one finds yet another escalator. It&#8217;s possible the escalator at the Metro Mall in Middle Village\u00a0beats this one, but either way I bet it&#8217;s close.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the station\u00a0one is surrounded by cranes and the noise of relentless construction of much-needed luxury housing, activities which should fill the area with cacophonous clangor for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For now, though, once can\u00a0experience a profound, eerie\u00a0silence well below ground inside the new 34th Street Hudson yard subway station.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4506\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC03143.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4506\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4506\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC03143.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"34th Street Hudson Blvd. Subway Station.
