The Art of Accumulation. Digital Hoarding. Never delete anything. I’ve gotten better about deleting things, but only under certain circumstances. Video of the live camera looking out my window is recorded in 1-minute increments. I concatenate them all together with a batch file into a single 24-hour masterpiece. I don’t know why I’m so focused on 24-hour long videos. It’s a good number. It means something. But anyway, after concatenating all those 1-minute files into a single 24-hour mp4 I do delete the 1-minute pieces. That’s good digital hygiene, right? Or does the act of amassing this mountain of video override any attempt to clean up after myself?

I feel fine today. The past 3 weeks have been rough, with a sinus infection and serious hearing loss that seems to have reversed itself. I’ve never had a sinus infection before so the weeks of spewing technicolor snot had its novel element. What I seem to have done is a I blew too hard, forcing a portion of the snot into a space where it caused blockage of hearing on the left side. In fact, I’ve had this problem before with anxiety and I don’t know what else causing hearing loss on that side. My sinuses have always been a bit of an adventure, with total nasal serenity abruptly intruded upon by spontaneous and seemingly inexplicable production of snot, gallons and gallons, or so it seems in the moment, when of course it is likely mere grams.

For the hearing loss (a common side effect of sinus infections) I used saline nasal spray. I think it really worked. I also took a series of steroids, 10mg of PREDNISONE, a word which looks like it wants to have the word NOSE within it. I’m not certain the steroids did anything but I took them more or less as instructed. I was supposed to do 4 the first day, 3 the 2nd, 2 the 3rd and 1 the 4th. I only got three of them on the first day but other days were as prescribed. I really don’t know if they did anything, though, and the tinnitus is worse than ever now. I had read that higher dosages of this steroid were associated with reduction of tinnitus but evidence seems scant.

I took an R train today. The walk along 34th Avenue yo Steinway Street in the dark of night is interesting. It reminds me of the days I came home at this hour, when now I wake. In the after hours days I might not get home until 10am. But those days were short lived. It was a novelty and something of a privilige to be allowed in to the overnight scene at certain Astoria bars. I wouldn’t know if that stuff still goes on. What sucked about it was that almost everyone smoked. It was like childhood in that respect.

…

I think I was quite wise to wait on taking the steroids. The list of possible side effects included many conditions that would not go over well in the context of being at this workplace. Vomiting, pooping, irritability. I did have to scramble for the shitter on the very first dose but after that there was no more spontaneous rectal evacuations. It may hvae been coincidental to having eaten something weird the night before. The ‘roids definitely had me feeling jacked up and confrontational, so it’s lucky no one was around. I just took the last pill for this regimen and will probably not take another. I just read that increased tinnitus is a side effect of this stuff. That’s great. I am definitely experiencing increased ringing.

I happened to be present yesterday at the re-installation of a Little Free Library on 29th Street. It had gone missing since maybe September or August of last year. This after the box was moved from the curb, where it had been chained to a light post, and placed up against the building on the other side of the sidewalk. I’ve suspected that they got busted for chaining the LFL to the light post, which I’m pretty sure is illegal. But the LFL is back. I had fun with that one. The woman I was with last year left a bunch of books in there that she was embarrassed to have. I don’t remember what they were or why she felt that way but she was happy to have a place to relieve herself of those pesky things.

I bought a poetry book yesterday but seem to have left it at home. It was a woman poet writing about post-coital ruminations, or at least that is what was happening on the pages I happened to open to. I do have a copy of a recent Poetry magazine but lately those volumes leave me wanting to turn away.

I feel exposed today. I chose socks in the near-dark, and find that a hole exposes just a little bit of my right foot through an opening in the Teva sandals that I’ve nearly worn out. I have gone sockless on occasion to no detrimental reaction from anyone. But holes in socks make me look like the poorie that I am. I will discard these socks upon removal tonight. I take these matters of sartorial windows into my financial situation seriously.

…

I set up a catchall email address for sorabji.com. It used to get so much spam you could hardly believe how quickly it came pouring in. Probably hundreds of garage messages a day to arbitrary or rather random sorabji.com email addresses like “guyduij” and “rooogvjk”. Years ago I had in mind an art exhibit where I would string several computer monitors together and run a tail-f command on the catch all email account. The spam would pour across the screens, rising up into the heavens or skies or wherever spam goes to evaporate. It could have made for an interesting visual. Most people don’t realize that emails typically contain a lot of unseen text matter, and this raw form of viewing it would reveal all.

I was on the Staten Island Ferry yesterday, verifying that indeed all the payphones at both Whitehall and St. George Terminals are gone. I knew about Whitehall since the summer and did assume the phones at St. George also got routed. But I needed proof, and the people I know who pass through that terminal can never seem to remember to check for me. But even if they did I’d have to see for myself. Most people aren’t adept at spotting payphones or spotting non-payphones for that matter.

While on the ferry I somehow landed on my old “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” pages, which I sometimes check in on to remind myself how quiet the Internet used to be. I was reminded that women used to sit and watch me be naked or nearly naked for long stretches of time. I wouldn’t care if any of that stuff was still floating around but I really doubt if it is. On those early days it took what would have been called mad skills to know how to save an image from a webpage. And the one woman I knw who watched me the most had zero skills in that realm, as much as it probably grated on her desires in later years. She would have adored having endless archives of those photos. Or so I like to think. She at one point wanted us to meet up in a hotel room in San Francisco. She was married but bored and frustrated with whatever she had. I wonder what she is doing now.

It’s a concept I revisit frequently.
