I remembered tales told of people who came pounding on apartment doors at 4 in the morning, demanding entry because of some fictional emergency.

But really, who expects anyone to be ready for an Amazon delivery at 5:15 in the morning? The attempted delivery was also, I later discovered, accompanied by some Spanish-language text messages from the driver. I don’t speak Spanish but I could get the gist of it. No access to the building, package will be returned. I’m wondering if this was even real or scambalicious. They’re not supposed to return packages after just one attempt, at least that’s how it used to work.

I don’t know. Fuck it. The doorbell is loud enough to wake the dead but I was suitably ensconsed in showerfulness that it sounded like a distant bleating.

Today’s commute was slightly mucked up. It sounds like somebody threw themselves in front of a train at 25th Street. I had my wits about me, at least, though thoughts of what might have happened at 25th Street lingered. The R had to go express from Canal Street to Dekalb, so I switched to the J at Canal and then on to Fulton Street. I find no reportage on what happened at 25th Street. Suicides are rarely announced by the police. If they were all announced you’d think there was an epidemic. Maybe you’d be right.

I made a trip to Westbury on Wednesday. I’ve not done a lot of payphoning on Long Island but through the magic (crutch) of Streetview I turned up a handful of possibilities. As recently as October, 2024, there were 4 specimens lingering on Westbury’s sidewalks. As of now only 2 remain, with evidence of one phone’s landline remaining while another phone has been removed without a trace. A non-working phone at a gas station and a robbed and looted phone on the wall of a restaurant were the only other finds. I think New Hyde Park might have some potential, Crescent Public Communications was based there.

I don’t like using Streetview but in these modern times I guess it’s a suitable tool for the task. It feels like cheating. Lumberjack payphone hunters walk the walk, they pound the pavement and search block by block, gas station by gas station, laundromat by laundromat. We don’t use these sissy-ass crutches.

Hah… did I just say “sissy”? Yikes. All in good manly-man fun. Another shortcoming of Streetview is that they rarely enter into the buildings. In a small number of cases they enter into a business but it’s not common. Payphones are likely to molder away in old laundromats but Streetview is not likely to enter into many of those.

My workplace is hosting a walk-a-thon type of challenge. I guess a lot of companies are doing this. I’m #3, averaging about 13-14 thousandstepas a day, trailing behind people who somehow manage to get in 35,000 steps a day. I guess if you have a job where you are always on your feet that is quite the advantage in this type of thing, not that I’m feeling competitive about it. I got in over 22,000 steps yesterday. Even though I work 9-5 I still find ways to get moving. You never see me in the break room here, I’m always spending downtime walking the walk around the place. Some have noticed and expressed respect for this, but they of course don’t know how I abuse myself in other ways and am anything but a picture of health. It’s meant to be a company bonding type of thing but some people are definitely on the competitive end, suggesting that people getting 35k steps per day should be audited. That’s the spirit of team building.

I just Woody Allen outside. If it wasn’t him it sure as hell looked like it. I used to see him around once in a while when I lived UES. I liked some of his films and think he got a bad wrap on the other stuff.

Hey, why not… I did not answer because I was naked in the shower and, on principle would not let anyone into the building at such an unlikely hour.
