I’ve got to stop with the games. They aree erasing my mind, voiding my intellect, vacating my other energies. But I justify the games, particularly while at the workplace, for their ability to prevent me from thinking too creatively or ambitiously in a role that values such thinking not at all. And the games pay. Oh, they pay alright. 20 hours of game play might get you $5 in gift cards or cash. Actually 20 hours is being generous. I’d say closer to 40 hours. These things are all a scam of some sort, but in the end the money is at least real and I do at least enjoy the games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some have said, in the interest of building a business, that game play of certain types can sharpen your mind and keep you alert. I do not believe that for one hot second. Despite my previous comment about erasing my ability to think creatively I don’t think games are detrimental to your mental faculties. If anything I think they can serve as an indicator of just how sharp your faculties are. As evidence I recall my mother having a series of minor strokes. During recovery she attempted to play the video games she had been playing before the strokes. She could barely do it. She could barely move the pieces around or align the tokens or whatever the hell the game entailed. She was aware of this, too, and after her recovery she remarked how odd it was to see physical manifestations of her brain condition. I myself was reminded of this when side effects from a certain statin I was prescribed sent me into a state of confusion. I had read about that side effect but never experienced or fully understood what it meant. I knew where I was but sentences spilled out incoherently and without meaning. I could only be silent to get myself through the hours it took for this condition to piss its way out of my system. I knew what I wanted to say but I could not say it. This lasted several hours and all throughout I knew where I was, what was happening, and had the sense to know it would pass. But it was puzzling and vulnerable to be in a workplace where I’m generally considered articulate and reliable only to be drawling out near-sentences and not able to say what was inside my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had a fun few days off. I work 4 days straight, then 3 days off. A more perfect schedule would be 2 days in, 3 days out, 2 days in. I would suggest this but the way this bureaucracy works the people who I would ask have no authority to implement a schedule change.
