If I did I think it was in a walk-and-talk recording that was too poor in audio quality to use. Whenever I bite into my morning Bartlett Pear I briefly remember the horny girlfriend from last year. (She liked when I called her that so I’m OK to do so, as far as I’m concerned.) For as thin a relationship as we had, so fragile and fallible, she did introduce a number of long-lasting changes into my life. She had me switch from grannysmith apples to pears, saying that apples actually do have acid in them that is bad for the stomach while pears do not. True or not? I never looked it up but it turns out I like pears better than apples anyway, though the pear is a far more delicate beast than the apple it replaced. THey arrive bruised and beaten from nothing more than a 30 minute commute stuffed, carefully and wrapped multiple times, in my bag. Then there is the DASH, the seasoning that claims it is “Everything but the salt.” Having never known of it before her I use it almost every day now. What else is there? I know there are other little pieces of life’s furnishings that she and she alone brought into my days. Of course there is the Bulgarian Yogurt, the White Mountain brand sprcifically but other brands, as hard as they are to find, are passable alternatives. I find only one store in Astoria carries White Mountain and they do so sporadically. Bulgarian yogurt would likely never have crossed my radar if she hadn’t put it in front of me.

We could have been such a great story. It was over 30 years previous that we tried, and tried again more than a few times to make something work, make something happen. The incompatibilities and impossibilities were more stark back then. It was simply that neithe rof us had the time. But there were other dynamics, built on what I now know are lies, or at least one big lie. When I was 23 she told me she was 31. That seemed like a big age gap at the time, and we joked about it a lot. When she turned 32 I considered getting her a card that said “HEARD YA’ TURNED 50!” This age gap was part of our lore, but it turned out to be a lie. Why? Who lies about their age to make themself look older? She asked that very question of me, but I have no reason to doubt my memory of that number. And whil it is perfectly reasonable that she would have forgotten some things over the decades I’m surprised she had no memory of saying that I was a black man in white skin. She had only dated black men before me, while after me her body count seems to have comprised mostly heroin addicts and other junkies of varying ethnicities and race. In fact every woman I dated from college through my mid-twenties were white but only dated black men. I think they were also all born in October, which I remember thinking was weird.

So little had changed. Nothing, in fact, about her character or impatiences had changed. If either of us learned anything it was I who knew to take the first opportunity I could to get out of this dysfunctional, potentially toxic relationship. In the past I would have gladly accepted the abuse and drama. Not anymore. This is no triumph.

Maybe i already talked about this elsewhere.
