Did I sleep better than expected? I don’t know, I wasn’t monitoring the situation. I was reminded of the failed sleep study experience several years ago. This was forced upon me by then-girlfriend now known as the Angry Asian. She insisted I snored and snorted and convulsed in my sleep, then later allowing that on most nights I just snored light a freight train for 5 or 6 minutes before that freight train trailed off into the distance, not bothering anybody. bEFORE THAT REOMPENSE i WAS FORCED TO GO TWICE TO A SLEEP STUDY LAB WHERE THE DOORS WERE ALL OPEN AND THE SLEEP STUDY TECHNICIANS PLAYED LOUD VIDEO GAMES AND TALKED ON THEIR PHONES LIKE there was no one else around. It was a joke of a scenario where every once in a while an increasingly impatient sleep study dude would bust in and tell me, in substance, to go the fuck to sleep. It was not possible, they had said, to schedule this around a time when I actually do normally go to sleep. So showing up at 8pm when I was normally going to sleep at 2am simply made no sense. But they had their scheduling to maintain. I ended up going to two of these sleep study sessions with similar experiences. The workers were gabbing on their phones, alarms and text-message alerts were beeping all through the night, there was even some loud music from a neighboring building just for added atmosphere. I had not done one before and have not done one since but something tells me this is not how sleep studies are supposed to procede.

So I wonder how I really slept last night, the daylight savings robbing me of a precious hour. I toked up on extra anxiety meds and also started taking a double-dose of a blood pressure med I’ve taken for years now. These and other meds might artificially soften the SHOCK to the system, though I don’t know if the shock was all that blunt.

I saw the R train woman yesterday but not today. She looked tired and dejected. We made eye contact again but with only two stops shared on our daily journey there really is no time to even start a conversation. I looked again and saw no ring. I am certain there was a ring some months ago. THere aere two women here at work who emerged as possibilities but I’m not so sure now. One makes great conversation, the other is black and beautiful and gave me a couple of long, lingering looks a couple of weeks ago when we shared the mutual annoyance of being locked in the building when we should have known better. But since then our paths barely cross, our schedules are basically opposite, and I see less of a future in that possibility than I did at first. Good God, she is beautiful, though.

I found a cell phone on a staircase at the Oculus today, as I made my way through that space in lieu of a working elevator at Cortlandt Street. The phone was fully working but required a passcode. I could have been some kind of hero but I did not have the time to find lost and found or try to contact whoever the phone’s owner last contacted. I placed the phone prominently on a higher syrface mumbling “This is not my problem.” Someone else will find it and do the right thing.

I am no stranger to finding phones and returning them to their oners. It’s the easiest$20 you can make. But today was not the day for this blast of consscientious generosity.

Coming to work on a Sunday puts you in the same space ass the ballers and ravers who’d been out all night. Is that who lost their phone? This time I don’t know and this time I don’t care.

The loss of an hour’s sleep could be a bad moment or it might not matter, since I’m not sure what happened.
