{"id":5275,"date":"2016-01-30T19:57:54","date_gmt":"2016-01-31T00:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/?p=5275"},"modified":"2016-01-30T19:57:54","modified_gmt":"2016-01-31T00:57:54","slug":"talking-in-the-chapel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsbj.com\/sorabji\/2016\/01\/30\/talking-in-the-chapel.html","title":{"rendered":"Talking in the Chapel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tI recently obtained binaural microphones for use with a Sony field recorder. &#8220;Binaural&#8221; looks like it would be defined as\u00a0a urinal with two receptacles but it actually refers to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordswarm.net\/dictionary\/binaural.html\" target=\"_blank\">sound recorded\u00a0using two microphones usually transmitted separately to the two ears<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Binaural recording differs from stereo in that the microphones are typically placed in\u00a0your ears, looking to the casual observer more like earbuds than microphones. This placement allows for recordings that capture\u00a0spatial localization and the so-called &#8220;3D audio&#8221; effect\u00a0as heard by humans, and by most estimates it does this  more accurately and immersively than stereo.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0recording below, made inside the chapel at Calvary Cemetery, does not make especial use of the 3D effect, but others I\u00a0am working on have, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/sorabjinyc\/at-the-casino-binaural-recording-use-headphones\" target=\"_blank\">this recording\u00a0I made at a casino a few weeks ago<\/a><\/strong>. The recording below should be part of a longer set in which I walk around the grounds of the cemetery remarking on\u00a0things I&#8217;ve learned and discovered out there over the years. I have to become more\u00a0comfortable with the recording gear and tame the noise made by the wind by procuring windscreen pads that will securely fit my headphones.<\/p>\n<p>Just checking in here. I&#8217;ve been working on a lot of things without\u00a0a lot to show for it. I am outlining a book which is taking shape, and which entails some time at the library. It does not take much time at\u00a0a research\u00a0center to make you realize what enormous swaths of information are not to be found on the public Internet.
