My head hurts, my feet stink, and don’t love Jesus.

Well, none of thosoe things are true, except that my neck kinda hurts from an unfortunate sleep posture. I remember that line from a Jimmy Buffett song once in a while, usually when my head hurts. The song became something of a something in high school and then in college, when my rock star friend got together with his sound guy to write a song. The sound guy sang a bunch of stuff, including the lines about “my head hurt,” and claimed it was al original to him. Years later my rock star friend heard the song on the radio and cursed that sound guy From afar for such a stupid little lie.

I noticed a couple of months ago that someone had added some bogus information to the Wikipedia entry about the Unisphere. Through the magic of coppy and paste that piece of nonsense has now traveled to about a dozen other web sites and will, I believe, come to be accepted as fact. I’m not going to say what the bogosity is — and I did not perpetrate this bit of vandalism — but I will be interested to see if or when a publication of some authority scoops up this inaccuracy and recycles it.

It makes me think this goes on in other ways, through Wikipedia. Maybe there is a conspiracy at work whereby hundreds of new, tiny “facts” are disseminated into the culture via bogus but authoritative-looking web sites. If there is not a coördinated conspiracy at work then I think there might be a meta-conspiracy of malcontents looking to muddy the information supply for puprposes beyond mere amusement or misinformation. Maybe it is grander then that, more Pynchonian.

I am at the Starbucks because I am out of coffee at home. Crisis.

I am not sure what is going on with my vision thing lately but it is not good. Ghostly cast about things, which is nothing new, but lately it seems more blotted. It’s a concern because the retinal specialist said my type of macular degeneration is the type than can accelerate very quickly.
