it was as if his enthusiasm for my keyboard was a form of praise, an assurance from him to me that i was worthy of the admiration bestowed on the keyboard, a sort of anthropomorphic transference of respect from the device to me and back again, the keyboard and myself equals in receipt of his interest and respect.

not at a starbucks. someone at starbucks needs to think about rotating customers. make a purchase every half hour or leave. the places are unlike other shops in their continuously-crowded state but i suspect it’s not entirely because people love starbucks so much they just can’t stand to leave the place. i think it’s because people are freeloaders, and it wouldn’t surprise me if a percentage of those folks never bought anything.
yes, i care a whole stinkin’ lot about this.

i sent a message last night to a rogue search engine, one which by all appearances seems legitimate but which ignores commonly-held exclusion standards. this obnoxious bot sends thousand of garbage pageviews my every single day, across most of my active web sites, and i’ve not seen anything to suggest that i benefit from it in the slightest. for some reason i couldn’t get the user_agent blocking to work in the way i’ve done it before, but i dug around and found a better way. now when anything from that obnoxious bot tries to grab my pages they instead get redirected to their own web site. maybe they’ll notice thousands of pageviews going to that one page and get the joke, or maybe they’ll just go on letting bots run the show.
i’ll say it again: the most disheartening thing about so much internet-connected technology today is that human beings are incapable of stopping it. i remember years back when online banking was kind of new, at least for regular banking customers. i forget the exact situation but i remember calling the bank about stopping a payment and the guy responded “It can’t be stopped.” he didn’t mean that it was too late or that the payment had already gone through. he meant that the technology invoked to initiate the payment was unstoppable once it had been activated. i seriously doubted this at the time but i had to let it go.
