My repeated attempts to purchase FilterForge rank among the most persistently irritating e-commerce transactions I can remember. In the end I paid the software developer directly, after as many a dozen attempts to pay via PayPal through the Digital River GmbH (Share-It) gateway. After a first attempt it took a while for me to realize that the purchase had not gone through, as the error message does not particularly stand out. Only after I realized I had not received any kind of download link or e-mail confirmation from PayPal did I notice the “Unfortunately…” message that followed the positive sounding text. I sent a number of inquiries to Digital River, all of which returned the same general response: We don’t know why this is happening. It remains a mystery, shrouded in opaque blankets of crappy software. Error messages differed, but I only captured two of them. The first one says the payment was merely being “delayed” while the second one claims Visa had declined the transaction, even though I was not attempting to pay with Visa.
