october seems to have hit me like a bag of bricks, once again, right on
schedule. it eluded me that that might be the cause, but every year it
happens, the seasons change and so do i. this year i also re-experienced
last year’s hearing loss, which wasn’t as bad this year, but the symptoms
were almost identical. when the temperature dropped 25 degrees in 24 hours
my left ear clogged up, feeling like liquid had accumulated. last year i
saw a surly ear/nose/throat doctor who stuck things up my nose and ears
(what a glamorous job) and put me on steroids which made me feel like i
was being cooked inside a microwave. i don’t think those pills made a
difference, and the hearing problem went away on its own.

i walked around like a zombie today, feeling numb inside and out.

this drama with LensCrafters is getting kinda weird. i bought a $500 pair
of sunglasses at the LensCrafters on 5th Avenue, with delivery expected 2
weeks later. the weeks passed and passed, and now it’s looking “glasses in
about an hour” is going to be “glasses in about 2 months.” i could really
have used sunglasses about a month ago, too. i knew something was amiss
with this whole purchase. the sales rep was very nice but she kept making
mistakes, so much so that the optomotrists there were all kinda making fun
of her for screwing up so much.

so if/when these glasses ever actually arrive i have this hunch that they
are going to be fucked up somehow. wrong prescription, wrong size, wrong
something. it’s just weird. the supervisor of the store called and sounded
like she might start crying over this, saying she had no idea why the lab
was taking so long or what the freakin’ problem was. she said i’d get a
discount, which is not expected but hey, i’ll take it. it’s strange, man,
how this one order seems to have flummoxed those fine folks.

i have a pocket full of gift cards, which i got as “rewards” from a credit
card i use. i’ve accumulated points for years, rarely using them for
anything except amazon.com credits, but i thought i’d try the cards. now i
have in my pocket $50 gift cards for starbucks, outback, tgi fridays,
dunkin donuts, and applebee’s. most of these places i avoid, but i got the
applebee’s and tgi friday’s cards for beers at the bar. the food at both
those places makes me sick. outback is usually reliable enough, but i
hadn’t been inside a starbucks in at least a year until i got this card.

something i miss about my credit card rewards program was this silly bit
of copy they put on the web site. the link to the page where you see what
rewards you can get with your available points said something like “Redeem
your reward points. You’ve earned it!” the “You’ve earned it!” line always
cracked me up, so needlessly feisty and transparently upbeat. i would do a
little fist-clench any time i saw that, feeling like i’d succeeded,
feeling like a SUCCESS!

alas, that tiny joy is gone. they removed that text from the web site. i
wonder why? whose job is it to implement these pesky changes? i earned it!
i really, really earned it!

god, my mind is a mess today. nothing. zero. null. empty set. Ø.
