Here are both sides of a deposit for the Citizens National Bank, in Lebanon, Kentucky. Stamped May 12, 1910 I found that the date took away my brief astonishment at the symbol seen in the top left corner of the check. It is a swastika. Until the Nazis made the image of the swastika synonymous with hate it was commonly seen in the western world as a symbol of good luck. That is all it means here but it is jarring sometimes to see symbols in their old usage, especially when their meaning has changed so much. I had a similar discussion online last night regarding certain scenes from older movies which, when seen today, look entirely different from how you might remember first seeing them. There is a horrible scene in Meatballs, starring Bill Murray. It is nicknamed the “Wrestling” scene but it might as well be called the rape scene. Look for it on YT. It also reminds me, in a different way, of the time I noticed my car had an NRA sticker in one of the rear windows. It was barely visible, since the glass was tinted dark. It was not my sticker. The car used to be my dad’s, and he toted some NRA affiliations just for show. For a Floridian he was very much not a gun guy, at least not until the end He often bragged about how he never once had to fire or even carry a gun throughout his entire military career. I took the sticker out of the car window the moment I saw it. The problem was not that I failed to recognize the symbol. I just couldn’t see it.
