This is a photo series of phone numbers in the Telephone Exchange Name format. These pictures are mostly from NYC, with a few from San Francisco and Philadelphia. I love spotting these things. Every time I see a new one I feel like I cracked an old code. You do not see too many of these any more but if you look for them (and if you know what you are looking at) then you can still see them on the streets and in other realms. Telephone Exchange Names were officially phased out during the mid-1960s but some of them still survive on old signs as seen in these pictures. In addition to signs and buildings I also look for old phone numbers in movies; and in my collections of old magazines, slides and family photos found at thrift shops and auctions, and other sources. My main sources of data for looking up what these old 2-letter telephone exchanges stood for is the Telephone Exchange Name Project and the New York City Telephone Exchanges site at net46.net.
