A second day of accessing porn on the kiosks has the task becoming tedious. As exciting a breakthrough as it was at first it quickly became monotonous and, dare I say, risky. It is not illegal to view porn in public but circumstances could get weird if kids are around. I will not leave the porn playing unattended. I have no desire to expose anyone passing by to this stuff, and on account of that I’ve been very careful in where I do this. I choose relatively isolated kiosks where there is a solid wall facing the tablet screen, and I do not do this at any kind of street corner or intersection where people could appear without me seeing them coming.
This severely limits the number of places where I can do this but it helps keep the endeavor under wraps. I am collecting these videos for later “release” to demonstrate the vulgarity of these kiosks, and I admit as well that I’m doing this to highlight how poorly planned and executed these half-assed products are. I am thinking I could dump the video onto the Dark Web, anonymously, though I don’t think the kiosk owners would have a hard time blaming me for this. They keep an eye on my writings about the devices, though I don’t think they would ever admit to it. I might have been responsible for changes in how the phone calls work. For some reason they set the volume on the loudspeaker so it could only be turned up half way. This made it essentially impossible to hear the person you were calling if there happened to be any noise in the area. I posted about this on the payphone site and within a week the call volume was restored to full capacity.
I just noticed something I hadn’t looked at before. The IP addresses for the kiosks make the devices look like they are located in Dearborn, Michigan, or at the Cheney Reservoir in Kansas. It depends which geolocation database you query against. Now I see that other resources think those IP addresses are in Newark, NJ. Yet another resource thinks the IP addresses are owned by the Ford Corporation in Uniondale, NY. That’s… kinda weird but probably just symptomatic of how those resources that claim they can map IP addresses to their locations are just putting you on most of the time.
There was one time when I put in my home Fios IP address into one of those geolocation things and it mapped my location right to the front door of this apartment building. That’s only happened once, though. I went back to that same site and it had me somewhere in New York but not really anywhere near where I am, just like the rest of the sites that try to map where you are based on your IP.
But the kiosks sending out essentially fake IP info might make it possible to access gambling sites that are only supposed to be accessible within certain states, like New Jersey. I do not intend to do that, except maybe just to see if it’s possible.
It is ironic as hell to me that the Achilles heel in the path to porn (and other less salacious things) is essentially the company itself. I’m not going to divulge details of how this works just yet, if ever. The technique is cumbersome enough that I can’t see it ever becoming widely used, though I guess I should not underestimate people’s motivations when it comes to accessing porn on the go. I take no particular satisfaction or thrill in seeing blowjob videos out on the street. I am just taking what I consider a vulgar and intrusive product and using its resource to extend that sentiment with vulgarity itself. I only intend to do this to make the point, and it will not be an ongoing pursuit, though I do intend to fill the screens with beautiful things for as long as it remains possible.
One thing I’m not clear on from their privacy policy is what information they might gather from onboard Internet access. They say they collect nothing from WiFi usage, meaning that URLs for sites you access on your devices using the kiosks’ WiFi are not stored. If they don’t collect that then does that mean they don’t collect usage data from the tablet web browser, which they claim no longer exists on the devices? Nothing in the privacy policy addresses data retention for tablet usage, but they might have left that out under the false premise that Internet access is not allowed on thesse things.
I always suspected the browser was still lurking within and that they were lying about that. I’d say more about this but that comes with the risk of saying too much about how I got into this.
They claim to keep surveillance video from the sideways facing cameras for 7 days, unless the footage would be needed for a police investigation. I guess that means the request from law enforcement, which requires a court-issued subpoena ,would have to be made within seven days of an incident? I am not worried about being seen on any such video, since I am not doing anything illegal, and even if I was worried about it those cameras cannot see what I am doing on the tablet screen. But I do wonder if they tell the truth about the front-facing camera located over the tablet screen. They claim it might one day be used for video phone calls and that it would only be activated by deliberate choice of the caller. I don’t think they are willfully lying about that but I do imagine it is possible for that camera to be activated by mistake. I mean if I’m allowed to access the stuff I’ve been getting to then what other follies and security gaffes lurk within these half-assed kiosks?
The only reason I think about data retention is because I intend to wait about a month before making this public. If they even care about this I assume they’ll do some kind of check on network activity, but any such data should be purged after a period of time just as a matter of course.
It is raining today, and I thought that might make it a good day to go get more of this stuff, what with fewer people out and around. But it’s just a little too icky out, though I could change my mind about that. The rain could give a certain noir element to things.
