A lot of quotes in this comprehensive piece are from people I knew or knew of at Time Inc. My boss of about three years is quoted at length, as is someone who, in 1995, stopped me in the hall and asked “Are you Sorabji?”

I have always disagreed with the assessment that Pathfinder was a train wreck. Of course it was. Everything in those days was an exercise in failing up, except for CNET and Amazon.

Pathfinder was doing innovative stuff no one else was even  thinking of at the time. When it failed it was the suits who said they had no time for those things.

But, it’s amazing how Time Inc. kept on keeping on all these years. Most of my memories of the company are good but no way would I have wanted to go back there again.
