It felt like someone had entered this room, and was standing behind me. It was afraid it was ransomware, or something more nihilistic. All I know is that the screens for both the desktop PC and the tablet PC on the piano across the room were all dark, and none of the usual ways of waking them up had any effect. I wouldn’t be spooked if this happened to just one of the machines but it happened to both, which are not physically connected. I shut both of them off, unplugged the Internet, nervously rebooted the desktop into Safe Mode. Nothing seemed missing or weird so I let that go, but now I’m thinking the problem was with the tablet on the piano, which does not have as much firewall type stuff on it. I was also thinking how I’d just downloaded a ton of shit from Usenet last night and saw a couple of Norton virus warnings fly by, but they seemed harmless and are commonly seen during Usenet binges.
So the piano tablet is shut down for now and I’ll look at it later. But that was a very real feeling that someone or something had intruded.
