Nothing worked, I got intercepted by crossing my own wires, but at least I got some Paul Harvey out there. A hilarious moment at 37th Avenue and ~100th Street: It sounded like someone was talking to me, responding to my chitchat with self. Really, it was like someone on the network had my number and was waiting for me to call in. I addressed this voice. I asked what he was talking about and who he was. I asked if he was intercepting my call and if so: WHY?
It was Paul Harvey. His voice is the one I’ve been broadcasting over the LinkNYC kiosks this week. I have no love affair with Paul Harvey. I rank Paul Harvey among the most insidiously congenial demagogues. But for what I am doing with the Links I find that religion works.
But my calls were being intercepted by Paul Harvey because I had the default record channel set to STEREO MIX and that means everything goes. It was hilarious to find myself asking “Who are you? Why are you talking to me? What are you answering?” Only to find that I was talking to Paul Harvey, his voice broadcasting over the Roosevelt Avenue LinkNYC kiosks, and then I further found that my voice was intermingling with his over those kiosks. As Paul Harvey’s aerodynamic voice sailed over Roosevelt Avenue so, too, did my sedentary timbre. It was something.
