One of the most distinctive and beautiful stained glass pieces at Old Calvary Cemetery is not visible to the public. It’s been that way for some years now, after damage to the front doors of the structure led the cemetery to cover up the front with sheets of plywood. Moldering away in oblivion (for all times, one assumes) is this beauty:
It is hidden inside the Miguel Alvarez mausoleum in Section 9, at 9-782-20 to be exact, not that you’d have reason to visit this location if the stained glass was your destination.
Alvarez was a cigar magnate whose company, the Y Pendas & Alvarez Cigar Company, had factories in Tampa, Florida; and New York City. Alvarez’s business partner, Ysidro Pendas, is interred in another mausoleum nearby in Section 9.
