thinking of a neat alphabet idea. neat to me. not an alphabet so much as a series of characters, with which one would not necessarily write sentences but instead single words, or two words, which mean something when turned over.

i thought of this the other day when i saw a tag with the word SNOW. the letter N was lower case, and looked like an upside-down U, so think snow, with a curvy un-spiked n, then turn it over, and you get MOUS. it was cool. the snow mous. it would have been finer indeed if the word SNOW inverted was a meaningful inversion, or a statement on the original word, like SNOW BLOW, or something. so far i have
A = V (there will be no cross on the A)
b = q
d=p
g = 8
H = H
I = I
M = w
m = uu
n = U
o = o
p = b
q = b
s = s
t = +
u = n
w = m
x = x
z = z

Hmmmmmmmmmm

today i woke up and discovered that my infrastructure was working, more or less, so i took advantage of that by getting some real work done for once. then things stopped working right and i had to go for a walk in the woods.

i did get good stuff done today, though. yay me. i am tired as butt for reasons unknown. maybe it was the late-night chat session whilst swilling whisky until 4am. naaaah. it must be brain cancer.

i think the experiemnt of using the computer as a television is a failure. i just don’t like it. television is a passive pursuit, the computer is not. and except for games (which are not exactly passive) i find the computer a hard realm in which to consume entertainment beyond shorties. so, it might really be time for the new TV. whoot. 55″ or more of HD LED 1080p. who doesn’t need that?

i had to pay some guys to come haul away the old TV. it weighed over 400 pounds, and while it was the hottest set ever when i got it 10 years ago it would today be considered a horking pile of junk. the pictures was still good. a SonyWega 36-inch spectacular that i got for damncheap through a Sony employee who was a friend of a friend.

o god, i am apparently at a place where a bunch of bloggers are about to convene. glorious. gloriosities.

the RAID backup is going slow, but not painfully slow. it’s just kind of crazy that it should take days to get going with this, but i do have assloads of data, if i say so my bad self. the old magazines i scanned take up gobs of storage, as do my buttloads of pictures and some video. and audio. part of the reason i went this route was because backing up thousands of DSLR images to DVDs was becoming a ridiculous chore, and a chore prone to failure anyway, with a surprising quantity of DVDs failing. i have had no encounter with failed DVDs or CDs, no experience to speak of at least, but the RAID approach just makes better sense. it costs more money, by far, but it should save more precious time, which would pay for itself, i guess. who the fuck knows.

speaking of old magazines, a nice person from Canada wrote last week with questions about a couple of copies of The Etude from 1901. the art work on different issues was identical. this was apparently not uncommon, at least with The Etude, in those days. nowadays i don’t think you could get away with a duplicate magazine cover on different editions, but in the early 20thcentury it happened at times. i responded with evidence, links to other examples of The Etude in which similar or identical art work appeared on at least 2 covers. i know these things, you know. and in return for this correspondence the individual offered to send me 2 copies of The Etude from 1901, copies which are not in my collection, and which were the subject of the original inquiry. these 2 covers from 1901 used identical art work from a couple of 1901 issues on my site.

the new additions to my collection are very welcome, as 1901 happens to be an under-represented year therewith. i am also short on 1907, as i recall. i made a list of issues from 1900-1925 that would help complete that span of years in my shelves. i take good care of the old magazines. each one gets its own polybag, sealable with a ziploc type of thing, and they are cared for with something approaching the zeal of an archivist. an amateur archivist, but the ZEAL is there. and you can’t preseve old shit without some ZEAL.

last night saw a culinary first for me. i ucked up a meatloaf, big time. simply, i forgot to add the bread crumbs or quaker oats. it was like eating dog food (not that i would know) and it took me a while to realize that this stuff was but grub. hoary, hoary grub. complete failure.

i was passing the jail on my way home from the cemetery yesterday when i spotted the pair of pants seen in the previous picture here. what’s the story? why pants outside a jail? why?
