Funny. As I left the LIBARRY I saw a text from Don, asking if I knew a place called LIC BEER PROJECT on 23rd Street near 40th Avenue. I did not but, curious and only 2 blocks away, I went to check it out. Place was completely packed, a band playing in the back, and altogether a promising looking place even in its asshole location. As I went over there I was trying to imagine what new hotel or condo might be right nearby, but nothing particularly close is it hand. It may be among the last vestiges of old LIC in those parts. One hotel on 21st Street is visible but those 2 blocks are pretty far considering the width of 21st Street. And this did not look like a hotel crowd. It was pure hipster.
The funny thing about it was that when I got there I heard Don yelling my name from across the street. He was getting a tire changed and he heard music and the roar of a crowd and was just like, what the hell could possibly be happening in this asshole part of Long Island City? So he texted me to ask if I am drinking again and if know this place.
The place has odd hours. I think they close at 9pm on Wednesdays and 11pm on weekends.
So after we sorted out the weird-ishness of our encounter we drove around LIC for a while, talking about all the 70 story buildings rising like hardons at Viagra’s testing labs.
Apparently a new-to-me 70-story structure is going up at Northern and 36th Street, this to complement the 40-50 story condo going up a few blocks away at Northern and Steinway, where the Western Beef used to be. It is apocalyptic in its way.
I told Don I want to get to a place where I drink once or twice a week. He said that’s damn hard to do when you’ve been where we’ve been.
With that I go home.At the ghetto coffee shop, where the coffee is unusually decent.
