Just trying to break in a camera I snagged cheap off eBay last week. It’s a Sony DSC-HX50, which I intend to use mostly when I need a long zoom. I had this same camera before but killed it by not taking proper care.

It rained while I was on the Staten Island Ferry, making most of these picture look I shot them black & white. The Photoshop tricks are kind of cheap but hey, I’m not trying to fool anybody. The zoom is not even close to what one would expect from a DSLR, but in better light I find it gets amazingly clear shots. The clouds and rain made these shots grainier than one might have expected.

I had not been on the Staten Island Ferry for a long time. I forgot how majestic it can feel sitting up front, watching the water and waves as the ocean breeze wraps salt around you. I was afraid I’d get seasick, as happened a couple of weeks ago when I took the Astoria Ferry to Wall Street. I was feeling ill for 45 minutes after getting off that raucous beast of a boat. By comparison the Staten Island Ferry felt like solid land.
