A friend once made a strange request. She wanted me to send her a recording of the sounds my door made when opening and closing it. Per her request, I promptly sent over this short masterpiece of found sound.

I’d become so used to hearing it I forgot that it was, indeed, distinctive, and ultimately symptomatic of a tenuous connection that could have led to the door falling off its hinges. This in fact happened a long time ago, when I did not see it coming, so I was ready this time to preëmptively do something about it.

It sounds like a complaining animal of some sort, and reminds me of the time I put a CD-ROM disc of Microsoft Encarta into a regular CD player. I guess audio on CD ROM discs is organized differently than on regular music CDs, because in a regular CD player it played, simultaneously, sounds of hyena screams and elephant snorts at the same time as excerpts from Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Quite a jarring juxtaposition of sounds.
