A new rule at The Vessel, the shawarma-like monstrosity at Hudson Yards, is simple: No singletons allowed.
Analysis of a string of suicides that occurred at The Vessel revealed one common trait. All those who jumped arrived at The Vessel alone. Thus, all those who arrive alone are considered suicide risks, and stigmatized as deemed appropriate by Vessel security detail.
The obvious scenario I conjured was of someone intent on jumping convincing a stranger to act like they know each other, then jumping, leaving the stranger saddled with guilt for having escorted a troubled person to their self-inflicted doom.
I also suspect that someone arriving at The Vessel in such a state that would drive them to jump would probably not take kindly to being turned away.
I further imagine security or NYPD detaining, questioning, and even institutionalizing visitors who came from afar and insist they are not suicidal but just want to climb up the damn thing.
I had no desire to ascend The Vessel. The new rule banning loners almost certainly means I never will.
Will bridges be next? Will individuals face questioning or be told to get help if they desire to walk over a bridge alone?
