I’d certainly seen this before but it never registered like it did this day. Nice to see the Unisphere, briefly also known as the Globitron, in this stained glass at the 33rd Street/Rawson 7 train station. In this likeness the ‘sphere is missing one of its three loop-dee-loop satellite orbital flourishes but it’s all good. This obviously does not aspire to be a literal depiction, since those kids climbing up the top left side would not be setting a very responsible example.

This glass is one of a series of works called “Q is for Queens,” by artist Yumi Heo. The series spans three subway stations at 33rd, 40th, and 46th Streets. The series is alphabetical, representing various Queens landmarks from A to Z. The letter “F” seen in the top right corner of this glass tells us this represents Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Other pieces include A for Aqueduct, B for Botanical Gardens, etc. A fun project for me will be photographing each piece and, without looking it up, trying to guess what the letters stand for. I’m a hot date, right? I might try that on Sunday.
