Having mentioned Perfect Resize in the previous post I thought I’d try it on some old pictures from a Treo I used to have. Ironically enough, on the day I started “SHIT DOESN”T WORK” I encountered the unhelpful “has stopped working” message to brighten my day. I downloaded a free version of Perfect Effects but could never get it to go. Anything I tried to do in that software returned the opaque “Perfect Effects 8 has stopped working” window, offering no error log or any way to debug the problem. Eventually I discovered I had out of date video drivers, and partly on account of having bothered the tech support at onOne Software about this issue (which was not their problem) I ended up buying the full suite. I’ve used it minimally since purchasing it but today’s adventure in resizing small images with minimal degradation ended in annoyance. This software also makes no attempt to restart where you left off before the crash, or to recover lost work. It also has no apparent support for industry standard alt+ keyboard combination shortcuts to access menu items.
Whatever the case, I did get as far as resizing an image from its original 1024 wide resolution to 3000. Here’s the before and after for that. It’s not bad, though I see where it could use further work to make the upsized image more convincing. Clicking the second image opens a new window with the full sized 3000px wide image.
UPDATED: Here’s a better example. A 640×480 image upsized to 3000×2250. The upsized images could use some filtering and such but it’s not bad.
