This was as close as I’ve come to seeing a U.S. President in person. Behold, the back of Donald Trump’s head as seen from the lobby of his eponymous Trump Tower this afternoon at about 12:45. Trump is presently the leading Republican candidate for President of these United States.
A crowd of 2 or 3 dozen enthusiasts stood in the lobby as the candidate, hot off the heels of last night’s Republican debate, did a television appearance inside the Trump Bar.
Some of the spectators held signs saying something like “THE SILENT MAJORITY BELIEVES IN TRUMP.”
I could have waited a bit to see if Trump would turn and acknowledge the gathering with his face and not the back of his head but I did not.
I am not particularly political, but I believe that a Trump presidency would be one in which nothing much happened — akin to Jesse Ventura memorably capturing the governorship of Minnesota and then serving one perfectly passable but forgettable term.
Several minutes after exiting the Trump Tower I had another brush with presidential aspiration. I had a package waiting at my post office box, which is in the basement at Rockefeller Center. While waiting for the clerk to get my package I noticed a bin full of mail. It was labeled “HILARY (sic) CLINTON”.
I got a laugh out of imagining Hillary Clinton visiting this post office to pick up bins filled with classified documents from her P.O. Box.
On his return I asked the clerk “Does Hillary Clinton have a P.O. Box here.”
He replied “They all do.”
I said “Really?”
“Most of them, yeah.”
I didn’t ask what “most of them” meant but assumed he referred to other presidential candidates and their campaign offices which used Rockefeller Center P.O. boxes as their mailing address.
A bit of sleuthing reveals that “Hillary for America” uses a Rockefeller Center P.O. Box as its mailing address.
