I have seen this sign for years. On more than a few occasions I have attempted to find the story behind it. This plaque is found on the 39th Street Bridge connecting Astoria/Long Island City to Sunnyside, Queens. I interpret it as a descanso of sorts in honor of one who died near this spot. But my sources come up empty on learning who Frank Bernardo was or what might have happened here on May 3, 1995.

I wonder why this search of the NYT.com turned up nothing:
“Frank Bernardo” in quotes, refined by stories published between January 1, 1995, and January 1, 1996.
Didn’t work without quotes, either.
