Years ago I found this letter to and from parties unknown. It turned up last week in a box with other papers in my storage locker, the contents of which I’ve been clearing out and mostly discarding. This piece of paper I will keep. I cannot tell if the person who wrote this did not fully understand what “Chump” means or if it is I who does not get the meaning of the word. I thought it meant “dolt” or “stupid person” but this individual seems at one turn to use the term sympathetically, implying that the recipient of the letter was a victim of a random act of violence, and that whatever happened was not their fault. But in the end the recipient is to blame because they are the chump and, in what might be an inside joke between them, “it’s the Sunday of a long weekend, chump.” Hell, maybe it’s a rough draft for some song lyrics.

Chump

Chump

A minor chump act is having to drive around in a car with a broken window That you’ve bound in Serane Wrap. There’s something inherently chump about this situation, because really it wasn’t your Fault, it was a random act of violence committed in your general direction. But being a chump is it about who’s to blame, it means you’ve been made to look bad, and you do, and it hurts in the pride. It’s embarrassing. You don’t want anyone to see it. Somewhere you think, you might be to blame. You’re to blame because it happened to you because your the champ and it’s the Sunday of a long weekend, chump.
