It is raining and unhappy outside, but I found myself walking about anyway. I cannot stand being in the rain, but this light and uneven rain didn’t bother me so much. I had my go bag with me. I call it that because it’s the bag I fill with the entertainment and communication products I will need if I have to check in at a hospital again. I came as close to doing that today as I have since actually checking in over 3 years ago. This time I thought something else was wrong, though. It was not just anxiety. It felt like a digestive problem rising up. This has happened before, it’s like a tightening or pushing feeling, but it always goes away. I blamed it on stress, which I think has some merit, but this time I was thinking it might be gerd-related. It seems to have gone away, as has happened in the past. If the pill doesn’t get rid of it a beer will but today it was feeling like it might make me sick. I just had not associated taking a panic pill with clearing up digestive unrest, but I guess it’s all in the same cycle.

This is a stupid, cyclical way to live. I should see a gastroenterologist, though. I used to do that but it seemed needless since no further erosion of the esophageal sphincter was ever found. I think I did two procedures, both laproscopic.

I just read that Gutenberg, a new editor for WordPress, is in the works. I don’t know if I trust that development, but whatever the case I wonder why they don’t let this TimyMCE Editor I use be an established alternative. Let’s see what it can do without me doing any real code.

It made a 4×5 table, just like that. Whoopie. But can it do what Word tables can and merge cells to create irregular patterns? Tables were my favorite thing in MS Word. They got a bad reputation when too many people started using them for design frameworks. We don’t do that anymore but there is still room for tabular data.

Everything is done with CSS and positioning. Maybe not everything.

Filling in these columns of text feels like a writing prompt, or an exercise, since I really have nothing to say.

AH, you can merge cells. Very smart. Tables can’t be expected to only be unalterable grids, but I seem to remember that being the assumption in early HTML tables. Maybe I’m wrong about that. Tables were what set my brain into gear when I learned MS Word on the job at Avon. I barely knew how to use the program when I started there as a temp, and I basically lied my way into the job, though the lie was not planned or intentional.
I was looking at old issues of the New York Times today and noticing how the stores, in columnar format, complemented each other both in substance and in presentation. The lesser stories got smaller headlines but their significance and even their meaning was implied by their positioning among the other stories.
It’s like filling a vessel. That’s exactly what it is. Like I did with the newsletters.
Filling every last table cell is not necessary, but what excuse would I have for leaving one of them untouched? This is not a design statement so I can’t use that gambit. You give yourself space to fill and that is what you do.

Passers-By Passing Me By

This is from flaneur.nyc, where everything old is new again. In 1999 or 2000 I walked around Times Square and Rockefeller Center stealthily taking pictures with a ball point pen that had a cheap camera built in. Some of those shots are not half bad.

Some keyboard shortcuts in WordPress make
little sense to me.
Shift-Alt-A for a hyperlink? I guess that’s a reference to the A in “A HREF” that starts every HTML link. Or maybe it’s just based on keyboard layout.
Shift-Alt-S to remove a link? Why S? Maybe because it is next to the A?
Compelling questions of our time.

ŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌŌI can do a lot of special characters by memory. Alt-0230 is the not-commonly used æ, which I noticed a lot in The Etude magazines. Most of them I have to pick around the numbers before landing on the right one.

Well, it’s all good to mess around with software but this editor, as much improved as it is over the default WordPress editor, is still pretty limited. But then what did I expect from a text editor? I guess I imagine it’s a multimedia tool for precise layouts of grocery store flyers and that type of thing. I’ve wanted to make one of those, but as a gag, with bags of cocaine and horse heads for sale.
