At first I thought wow, I never hear about this sort of thing happening in Astoria. Then I remembered that I hear about it all the time, but that it doesn’t get press attention because there is no connection to POTUS. But then what I hear about is people getting forced out of non-stabilized apartments. The most direct connection I had to someone being illegally forced out of a stabilized apartment was when someone who used to live downstairs was told by the owner that he wanted to movie members of his family into that apartment. So the person moved out but the people who moved in next are pretty definitively not family members or relatives of the owner. But this account is based on something a woman at a bar told me, and I’ve never sought to verify it. I have also had the humiliating experience of the building owner threatening to not renew my lease, to call the cops on me, and asking me outright to just get the fuck out of here.
