I never noticed how the letters R and A are conjoined in the Sports Illustrated logo. Was it always like that? I do not know and don’t think enough of it to research it. Rumors seem to be that the magazine will be sold to Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and someone I never respected for how he attained his wealth at the expense of others.

I don’t care who buys it. My first real Internet job was at Sports Illustrated, in 1995, so there is that connection to potentially keep me interested. But these days I don’t think I know anyone still there or elsewhere at Time Inc. or even Time-Warner. The only person I could think of who might still be there now says on his Facebook page that he “worked” at Turner Broadcasting, which for him meant CNN. The past tense of his status there seems to indicate he moved on but it would be weird for me to just ask him out of nowhere after all these years.

My memories of Time-Warner are all good, I mean as good as memories from a job can be. But I would not want to go back to that lifestyle now, not that I have any reason to think I would. It is hard to believe how far Time Inc. has fallen. While I was there the websites were only starting to be taken seriously, with SI actually being kind of lucky for how its print editor-in-chief thought the online space was pretty promising. Editors at People openly said the Internet was a waste of time (hah, nice pun) and top brass at Time Inc. were famously disinterested in anything to do with it. Of course it all changed but by the time I left it was still a transition in progress, even after AOL bought the company.
