If Hopper had painted something like this he would likely have included a person sitting on the john, reading a newspaper or, more likely, looking toward the window, even though its frosted glass offers no meaningful view to the outside. Hopper, ever unsympathetic toward his subjects, would have found a way to diminish the person’s dignity further than he would by simply depicting them in what most consider a moment not worth sharing. I lightened this up a little bit to articulate the tiles on the wall, and to highlight the mold on the tiles closest to the toilet. I also thought the natural state of the torn off toilet paper gave the transient flourish that characterizes a shared facility like this.
