This is an old sign. The Brooklyn B29 bus line has been gone for decades. The B24 endures. This bent sign on Greenpoint Avenue in Blissville, Queens, has probably been nailed to this spot since at least the 1970s. Last night I found a picture I took of this sign in 2007. Back then my shuttered mind thought nothing much of this strange relic, but today I went over to see if the sign survived. It is still there, and I herewith provide photographic evidence. After spotting this old thing I burned a month’s worth of energies walking clear to Maspeth, traipsing the hilly rugged soot-crusted snow-blobbed terrain behind the cemetery to the train-tracked flatlands of Maspeth Avenue and Rust Street, where I stood in a parking lot of the only official “Truck Stop” I have seen in the 5 Boroughs. I wedged my way to Grand Avenue, then Flushing Avenue, then to 65th Street and Grand Avenue, which is familiar territory. Alas, the Remsen Diner and the massive Purple Beech Tree at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both are gone, leaving their vacated spaces for rent. Everything between Maspeth and this B24/B29 bus map was, to me, a mixed bag of alien territory and vaguely recognized wherever, stuff I’ve seen from behind the filthy windows of the q67 and q39 buses, but that feels less celebrity for being able to touch it.
