I made good eye contact with her today, when she was not sleeping on the train. She looks so interesting. She noticed that we were exchanging looks like this. Nothing wrong with it until someone loses an extremity. Her pants were less torn up than her usual sartorial appointment in that realm. She had what I think was a jacket, which implies she works in an air conditioned office. But who knows. Air got much cooler the past couple of days. She exited at her usual 57th Street/7th Avenue. I had to switch trains and it turned into a bitbch drama when the promised Q train transfer at 14th Street/Union Square just disappeared. Poof. Where do trains go to when this happens? So I got smart and found that a downtown express 4 should be arriving in 6 minutes, which was plenty of time to get from the NQRW platform to the 456. I made it, indeed, a triumph of my day. I sat down on a bench and a woman kept announcing words and phrases that I could not understand but I thought they were directed at me until I turned to see an earpiece and a distant look of someone talking to someone far away. It reminded me of a time I found a dime on the sidewalk and after I picked it up a woman got right in my face saying “THAT’S WONDERFUL! THIS MUST BE VERY EXCITING FOR YOU!” It seemed over the top for a stranger to be so excited and involved in my finding a lowly dime on the sidewalk. But it qasn’t that. She was on her phone, virtually invisible to me, talking to someone far away but delivering a joyful, needle-like look of joy to me without even knowing it. Maybe there is a future with the subway woman and me. I wanna go where she’s going.
