I found this depressingly inspiring note at the North Burial Ground in Providence, Rhode Island, in March, 2013. It’s sad as hell but the mother’s enthusiasm in keeping the boy alive, if only in memory, is beautiful. I love how she dots her Is. They look like sparklers. The North Burial Ground was, as I recall a mix of very old and very recent. The oldest sections echoed with the silence of being forgotten. The newer ones, such as where I found this note, resounded with the energy of memory. At first I thought the image was of the actual child that had died but it looks like a stock photo from Hallmark. The text matter printed on the first photo is continued from the second photo, which shows the front of the card.
