Making a Payphoen Radio call at 14th Street/Union Square at about 5:15pm when a woman walked right up to me, in my face, seeming curious about the fact that I was making a payphone call, that I was using a payphone to make a seemingly legitimate call.
It can get very crowded on that spot but her proximity to me was not forced or caused by the crowd. She was standing in place, looking right at me, for several seconds.
Her head was basically completely covered: mask, sunglasses, a headscarf coverig her hair. In pre-mask times she would have looked pretty conspicuous, and even in these times I thought she looked … different.
At first she stood to my left, watching for severals econds. Then she walked around the other side of the payphone and stood in front of me, to the right, once again staring, or just watching.
I continued my call, which was otherwise pretty unremarkable and probably will not be used for anything. I hoped she’d still be around but I couldn’t find her. Maybe I’ll post a desperado Missed Connections siren song.
