This is the first new-to-me sighting of an old telephone exchange name phone number in over a year. I’m not counting the Woody Allen PLaza-8 autographed card, since that had been in my possession for a long time before I scanned it in April. Before today the last exchange-name sighting in the wilds of New York was in Bensonhurst, where CLoverdale 9-4900 lurked outside Bruce Plumbing Supply. This sign, on a fence at someone’s house in Corona, Queens, shows what is either a MIchigan or a MInnesota exchange name phone number for one Arrow Fence, a company that appears to be defunct in the 5 boroughs but which may have been headquartered in Howard Beach. Today’s version of this phone number, 718-641-8240, leads to a spammy automated message promising to find businesses in the area similar to Arrow Fence.
